About Ali Brown

I am an independent interior designer and decorator specialising in residential design. Licorice Design Ltd was established in 2005 and I have decorated and advised on hundreds of homes in the Wellington area since. Based in central Wellington I service the areas of Wellington City & suburbs, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Eastbourne & the Bays. However, if your project is further afield please contact me to discuss, I am able to work off plans and photographs for any out of town jobs.

I have a passion for residential design, particularly for people wanting to improve their homes without undertaking enormous and costly renovation projects. I believe that your home can be both beautiful and functional, while safeguarding the treasures and memories you have collected throughout your life.

Often this can be achieved by the simplest means – clever storage, decorative accessories, strategic lighting or rearranging a room to better suit the needs of the people who live there – contact me to arrange a consultation for your home.

What does a designer do?

An interior designer is here to help you make decisions. Many people have good ideas about how they want their home to look and feel, but are unsure of how to achieve it. By employing a designer you are getting a trained eye with a wealth of knowledge translating your ideas into a real plan for your home. Above all I am here to guide you through the process, whether it is a simple colour consultation or a major renovation I can offer practical advice and original ideas every step of the way.

Won't it cost me more than if I do it myself?

Often, no. My experience and knowledge eliminates the need for you to run around, make dead end phone calls or go on stressful shopping trips. I can save you time and hassle by pinpointing the products and suppliers that are right for you. Also, as a designer I am able to take advantage of specials offered by manufacturers and importers – often passing the savings onto you.

How many visits will it take?

It depends on the complexity of the job and how quickly you can make a decision. For example if you are getting new curtains there will be around 4 visits. One to consult on your requirements and to measure the windows. Up to two return visits to bring samples to your home to discuss, and then the installation of the finished product.

If you need a colour consultation for interior or exterior, this will often require 2 -3 visits as well until the final colour is decided on.

If you have an ongoing project like a renovation or new build, then sometimes the client/designer relationship continues for 3 – 6 month until the last pieces are in place.

How much does it cost?

Each designer has a different fee structure. I charge an hourly rate for consultation work, but the products you buy from me will cost you no more than you would pay in a retail shop. This all comes with the added advantage of personalised independent service. Please call me to discuss my fee structure.

"When we needed help choosing colours, fabrics and furnishings during the renovation of our home we asked Ali Brown, from Licorice Design.  We had seen another home where she had done the interior design and we loved what she had done. Our expectations were surpassed.  Not only did she quickly get onto our wave-length as to what we were trying to achieve (an encourage us to be bold) she made the whole renovation so much easier and fun.  She took all the hard work out of it for us by sourcing fabrics and furnishings and selecting colours while still giving us choices. We would highly recommend her to anyone wanting her flair and professional, very reasonably-priced advice."

Rosemary & Jeff - Rona Bay

"Hiring Ali helped us to achieve the wow factor we were looking for in our kids bedrooms.  Every time I walk into our kids rooms I always smile. I absolutely love every little bit of them and wouldn't change a thing. Ali was very professional, knowledgeable and understanding of our needs and wants and an overall pleasure to work with.  We would highly recommend her to anyone."

Lisa - Eastbourne

"It started as a DIY paint job, but we were not certain about the colour choice.....and along came Ali! We have not looked back since inviting Ali to our home to share with us her expertise and give our home a facelift.  She possesses a natural talent and flair for complimenting colours and the entire process was about what we liked, what would work best, and what suited us.  She is attentive to detail and Ali always kept us well informed, we love reliability.  We would happily recommend Ali to anyone considering a fresh home."

Helsa & Todd - Wellington

"I found Ali's help invaluable.  Faced with the need for exterior house painting, and also with the addition of new balustrades, I knew what I wanted to achieve, but lacked the colour and design expertise to proceed on my own.  Ali worked together with me, professionally, promptly, efficiently and the project moved ahead to a very pleasing outcome.  My house looks the better for it, and I am a very happy customer."

Anne - Eastbourne

"Ali was a lifesaver.  Whilst I had built houses before, and pride myself on good interior design skills, I was completely overwhelmed and unable to make a decision on this occasion.  We were building a new house, and decisions needed to be made,  I had gone from confidently knowing what I wanted, to being crippled with uncertainty.  And then came Ali.  She quickly could see what I was trying to achieve, and with no fuss, confirmed colour choices for bathrooms, carpets, paint and tiles.  She was just wonderful.  She also spent time with me sorting through curtain samples, and demonstrated extreme care for detail in helping me create a unique design for my youngest girl's curtains. I would happily recommend Ali, and would use her again without hesitation.  Thank you Ali for making what was a nightmare of a time for me, a dream outcome."

I decided to renovate the interior my home and found Ali Brown from Licorice Design. I have no great knowledge of matching Paint, Flooring and Fabrics. Ali took all the hassle out of it by recommending suppliers and tradespeople and helping me choose my new colour scheme.   My house now looks a million bucks thanks to the fantastic help and advice I received from Ali. I would recommend Ali to anybody looking to renovate.
